What’s on in Brisbane in January, 2024 – 20+ Great Ideas!

Welcome to Brisbane’s muggy season! So, what’s on in Brisbane in January? We’ve got loads of shows and concerts this month, along with a few havens that provide respite from the summer heat. Highlights include the NBA exhibition that’s currently touring around Australia, the Australian Open rooftop soiree, and Tony Hawk’s in town for a skate demo in Fortitude Valley. As usual, there’s plenty to do.

The Magic of Monty Python

  • What – Screening of Monty Python videos, along with videos created by the members of Monty Python after they disbanded.
  • Where – GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art).
  • When – Jan 13 – 27.

Metaverse of Magic

  • What – A family-friendly event involving a live magic show where the host ‘journeys through the metaverse to face four masters of illusion’. The event also encourages crowd interaction, allowing attendees to participate via their mobile phones in a number of challenges.
  • Where – QPAC (Queensland Performing Arts Centre).
  • When – All of January.

Dangerous Goods

  • What – A ‘hot as hell’ cabaret featuring ‘fully loaded and flammable’, ‘high octane entertainment’, featuring a world-class lineup of circus acts and burlesque.
  • Where – QPAC (Queensland Performing Arts Centre).
  • When – All of January.

Fairy Tales

  • What – An exposition of ‘centuries of beloved folk stories’, which are explored through art, film and design.
  • Where – GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art).
  • When – All of January.

Bluey’s Big Play

  • What – The famous cartoon set in Brisbane is brought to life in a theatrical performance featuring puppets. Find out more here.

Day Out With Thomas: The Colour Tour

  • What – A fun-filled family event celebrating the joy of colour through the world of Thomas the Tank Engine. Features, rides, meeting Thomas the Tank Engine and Sir Topham Hatt, face painting, play pit, wooden track building, a Thomas movie and arts and crafts, all inside an indoor adventure playground!
  • Where – The Workshops Rail Museum.
  • When – Jan 1 – 26.

Twilight in the Vines

  • What – Enjoy Sirromet Wines’ stunning setting with locally made fine wine paired with a seasonal platter. Find out more here.

  • When – All of January.

Chicago The Musical

  • What – The award-winning musical ‘Chicago’ with a sharp and sexy jazz score.
  • Where – QPAC (Queensland Performing Arts Centre).
  • When – January 4 – 31.

The NBA Exhibition

  • What – The ultimate NBA exhibition that’s touring Australia, featuring 20 sections of historic memorabilia, VR and AR interactions, an ‘infinity room’ and much more!
  • Where – QueensPlaza.
  • When – All of January.

Karaoke Brunch

  • What – Karaoke brunch featuring cocktails, wine, beer and a five-dish sharing menu with tacos, poppers, salsa, buffalo wings, garlic bread and of course singing. Tickets are $69 per person.  
  • Where – CLAW BBQ Shack, Bowen Hills.
  • When – Jan 13 – 31.

The Pink Flamingo Spiegel Club

  • What – The Pink Flamingo Spiegel Club has made its way from the Gold Coast to Brisbane to delight the crowd with a sexy cabaret circus, a male strip show and/or a sexy late-night cabaret show, depending on your flavour. Find out more here.
  • Where – Northshore Brisbane.
  • When – All of January.

Candlelight Concerts in Brisbane

  • What – Throughout January you can catch concerts under candlelight – including Swan Lake, a Beatles tribute on strings, movie soundtracks, tributes to Whitney Houston, Mozart, Coldplay and more! Find out more here.

  • When – Jan 11 – 31.

Goboat Brisbane

  • What – Don’t want to drive but want your own private boat? No problem, check out Goboat! No boating licence needed either. Boats are made from recycled PET bottles, are shade and pet-friendly, fit up to eight people and drinks and food are available to purchase, or you can BYO!
  • Where – 194 Breakfast Creek Road.
  • When – All of January.

Rearranged: Art of the Flower

  • What – A collection of paintings, sculptures, textiles, ceramics and new media paying tribute to the lovely flower.
  • Where – Museum of Brisbane.
  • When – All of January.

Tennis Lawn Party

  • What – Tennis fans get ready, one of Brisbane’s most iconic rooftop venues is transforming into a ‘prestigious lawn party’ featuring a ‘luxury old English’ theme – all in celebration of the Australian Open Finals!
  • Where – Lina Rooftop.
  • When – Jan 14 – 28.

January 15 – 22, 2024 – What’s on in Brisbane in January

Storytime Ballet: Cinderella

  • What – An interactive storytime ballet about Cinderella. The audience can get involved with interactive wands (available at the venue).
  • Where – Brisbane Powerhouse.
  • When – Jan 18 – 21.

The Sleeping Beauty

  • What – A ballet production of Sleeping Beauty accompanied by music from Tchaikovsky.
  • Where – QPAC (Queensland Performing Arts Centre) Concert Hall.
  • When – Jan 18 – 20.

Fairy Tales Festival

  • What – This three-day fairy tale exhibition involves storytelling, performances, workshops and more.
  • Where – GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art).
  • When – Jan 19 – 21.

Lifeline Bookfest

  • What – The good ole Lifeline Bookfest is back again! If you haven’t yet been to this cheap, dazzling and monstrous display of books that visits Brisbane regularly, get on down! The only problem is, you might get lost for time! (I certainly do!).
  • Where – Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
  • When – Jan 13 – 21.

An Evening Without Kate Bush

  • What – A ‘cult cabaret’ performance that pays tribute to Kate Bush.
  • Where – (RPAC)Redland Performing Arts Centre.
  • When – Jan 24.

THPS25

  • What – I’m pretty excited about this one! Tony Hawk, arguably the world’s all-time greatest skateboarder, will appear at Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall in a vert skate demo. Other pro skaters will be joining, skating to the tunes of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater Cover band. The event will also feature a fully immersive experience of his Tony Hawk Pro Skater game. Whatever that means. I’m in!
  • Where – Fortitude Music Hall.
  • When – 27 Jan.

RENT: The Musical

  • What – A musical set in the gritty streets of New York City.
  • Where – Playhouse, QPAC.
  • When – Jan 27 – 31.
